I am Alan Deeming. You will find a fair bit of detail about what I have done on behalf of the IW marine committee of the Angling Trust by clicking on the “OUR WORK” button in the main menu bar (clicking on further pages from the drop down menu brings up specific additional topics.)
I am a retired electro-mechanical design draughtsman having spent virtually all by working life in the Aerospace industry.
I started fishing about age 6 when my dad introduced me to freshwater fishing in “Chases” pond, next to the cement mills. He soon introduced me to sea fishing from the beach & I spent many years fishing mostly the “back of the Wight” in the times when it was fairly productive. This was often in the company of a school chum, John Meaning (now owner of Meano’s workshop).
John introduced me to boat fishing & once I started working, the highlight of my year was 2 weeks of pre booked fishing for Cod off the Needles with well known skippers Berni Hayward, Mike Scott & Trevor Hayward. In those days a cod below 10 lbs was big news as the normal size range started at about 15 lbs.
I was heavily involved with the now disbanded Isle of Wight Angling Society & I have recently been loaned a quantity of interesting documentation of theirs.
I gradually migrated to doing mostly boat fishing & became involved with Bembridge Angling Club by way of having trips with Mark Rayment (now Solent & Wight line Cruises) & then becoming a regular crew member with Ross Staplehurst with whom I was introduced to the joys of offshore wreck fishing. I also developed an interest in Shark fishing in the early days when there was a reasonable chance of catching them. My one remaining interest in shore fishing is catching Mullet where my original background in freshwater fishing stands me in good stead.
I owned small dinghies for inshore fishing for many years but I finally managed to purchase my own 8 meter purpose built angling boat which I keep on the Bembridge Angling Club moorings.
I have held various officer positions in Bembridge Angling Club & I am currently general secretary & publicity officer & I add content to the BAC web site. As well as representing the IW marine committee of the Angling Trust, I am also a member of the Angling Trust’s national Conservation & Access Group.
I spend a vast amount of time on my work for Bembridge AC plus the Angling Trust at local & national levels (see “OUR WORK”) but still manage to fit in the occasional refurbishment/repair of rods & servicing of reels and actually managing to go fishing.
